SR522 – UW Bothell/Cascadia Community College Campus Access

Mowat Construction Co. for Washington State Department of Transportation

White Shield provided construction survey services to support Mowat Construction and WSDOT in the construction of a new $50.7 million entrance to the south side of the University of Washington and Cascadia College Bothell campus. In addition to the new entrance, the project includes a new signal and exclusive exit lane to the campus at the southbound I- 405 to westbound SR 522 off-ramp, and a new bridge for the I-405 off-ramps constructed over the campus access street. White Shield’s services included survey for slope staking, pavement finish grade, drainage structures, subsurface drainage, and retaining walls. To create space for the new entrance, crews removed nearly 360,000 cubic yards of soil and built the tallest soil nail retaining wall in Washington State. The wall measures 90 feet tall and nearly 600 feet long. The new ramp to the joint campus was opened in September 2009 ahead of a challenging schedule.
